Cincinnati to Start Educational Campaign to Improve Recycling

May 20, 2021

The City of Cincinnati is proud to once again partner with Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District, the Ohio EPA and the Recycling Partnership to make sure Cincinnati’s recycling efforts count.

Beginning the week of May 24th and running through July 3rd, a crew of Rumpke team members will be doing curbside education to improve the quality of material collected in recycling containers. The team will review recycling carts from approximately 20,000 households throughout the City.

If items not accepted in the recycling program are found, residents will receive an educational tag explaining what items shouldn’t be included on future collection days. If contamination continues to be found in carts during future inspections, residents will receive a tag explaining what items need to be removed before cart is collected.

This is the second time the City of Cincinnati has participated in the program. In 2019, the program was able to reduce contamination from 28% to 19%.

Tips to make your recycling efforts count:

  • Recycling should be loose: Don’t place recycling inside of a plastic bag
  • Items should be empty: Make sure you remove food waste and contents of packages before recycling
  • Items should be clean: Give items a quick rinse before tossing them into your cart
  • Items should be on the list: See our website for a list of acceptable items
  • The triangular recycle symbol on plastic items does not mean the item is accepted locally.
