Multifamily Homes
More than half of Cincinnati residents live in multifamily buildings with 5 or more units. Properties with 2–4 units are grouped with single-family homes and receive curbside pickup. Multifamily residents are key to the City’s zero waste goals, and expanding recycling access in these communities is a priority.
Recycling in multifamily housing looks different from curbside service—but it’s just as easy. With on-site dumpsters, shared containers, and in-unit bins, residents can conveniently recycle where they live, reducing landfill waste and protecting our environment for future generations.
Green Cincinnati Plan Priority Actions
- Increase the number of multi-family dwellings with recycling infrastructure
- Minimize recycling contamination through culturally appropriate education, partnerships, workforce champions, and resident feedback
Multifamily Recycling Pilot Program
In 2025, The City of Cincinnati, in partnership with The Recycling Partnership, launched a recycling pilot program to expand recycling access to large multifamily homes (5+ units), such as apartments and condos, and to test strategies that reduce contamination. The pilot program places recycling dumpsters or carts directly at multifamily properties, provides free in-unit bins, and supplies multilingual education materials to help residents know what they can and cannot recycle
📊 Pilot Highlights (as of Oct.2025)
- 6 properties participating
- Nearly 4 tons of material diverted from the landfill in September
- 130+ indoor recycling bins requested by residents
- 500+ housing units now have convenient on-site recycling access

🏠 Live in a 2-4 Unit Building?
If your household has two to four units (like a duplex, triplex, or four-family), you can participate in the City’s curbside recycling cart program instead of the multifamily pilot. It’s easy to request a free cart and an indoor bin through 311!
