After the Fire

Helpful Information

Assistant Fire Chief Sherman Smith

A fire is a stressful event for all those involved. Not knowing what to do or who to contact can be even more stressful when the fire department leaves. You can download our After the Fire document to write down important information you will need. We have also listed important phone numbers and notes to take below. Lastly, there are links to websites that may help you as you and your loved ones get re-established.

  • Write down important information about your fire incident. This should include an Incident Number given to you by a fire department member, the location's address where the incident occurred and a fire investigator's name if an investigator is present.
  • Document fire damage by taking photos and notes while the incident is fresh in your memory and you are at the location.
  • Contact your insurance company.
  • Secure the property. This is the responsibility of the property owner. There are companies you can pay to do this for you or you can complete this task yourself.
