Nature Encounters
Join us each and every Saturday at the Trailside Nature Center for a variety of nature themed programming. All free – and FUN! All programs either meet or take place at the Trailside Nature Center.
February:
February 1 – Groundhog Day! Come on out of hibernation and head to Trailside for a talk and activities about groundhogs and Groundhog Day, just in time for the celebrations tomorrow! Learn a little about the history of Groundhog Day, why we celebrate it, and of course some fun facts about our favorite furry friends!
February 8 – Valentine Bracelets Scrambling for a Valentine’s gift? We’ve got you covered! Join us in making a Josephine knot bracelet, a symbol of love and interconnectedness. We’ll also learn a little bit about fiber arts and their history in the Cincinnati area!
February 15 – Love is in the Air ...and sea and earth! Join us to learn all about the cutesiest things animals do to show their sweetheart they care, from the Canada goose to the coyote! Afterwards, we’ll take a short hike around the park to hopefully spot some lovebirds!
February 22 – Fabulous Furs Come learn all about the work of nature’s finest fashionistas, from the waterproof and warm fur of a beaver to the flashy, fierce warning colors of a skunk! We’ll design our own animal (should we go for bold and showy or quiet and camouflaged?) and get to touch some of the softest furs around!
March
March 1 – Frogs!
Hop on over to Trailside and enjoy an hour of froggy fun! We’ll learn to identify some common frogs living in Burnet Woods and how to attract them to your yard. We’ll also play games and make a fun craft to take home!
March 8 – Baby Birds
Parenting is hard work! Learn how you can support baby birds and their parents with nest building and make a clothespin birdfeeder to take home. We’ll learn about how birds in our area make their nests, what materials we can give them to help out, and a little bit about what it’s like to be a baby bird from egg to first flight.
March 15 – An Eggcellent Adventure
You might know that birds lay eggs, but did you know that every bird lays a unique egg? Get up close and personal with eggs from Cincinnati and beyond, from the humble house sparrow to giants like the ostrich, and learn why each egg looks so different. You’ll even get to make your own miniature robin nests to take home and hang up!
March 22 – World Water Day
Join us for the world’s yearly celebration of water at Burnet Woods Lake! In keeping with this year’s theme of “Glacier Preservation,” we’ll talk about what life was like in Ohio during the ice age, when a great glacier slowly moved over our city and led to the landscape we see today. We’ll also take a short hike around the lake to explore modern geology and water systems.
March 29 – World Earth Hour
Hosted by the World Wildlife Fund, World Earth Hour challenges you to devote one hour to improving the natural environment around you. Join us for a hike focused on plant ID, removing invasive plants along the way and learning about the challenges they pose to Burnet Woods and the world at large.
