Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week 2024
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced that this year's Fire Prevention Week theme will be: "Smoke alarms: make them work for you!"
Install smoke alarms throughout your house! They should be installed in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on each level. Your Cincinnati Fire Department has partnered with the American Red Cross Association to accomplish this goal by installing free smoke detectors in your home. Visit the 311 website today and begin a request for your detectors by typing "Smoke" in the Begin Request box.
Make sure smoke alarms meet everyone's needs. Did you know there are several kinds of smoke detectors, and some are made to help those with disabilities? Bed shaker alarms, designed to help those with sensory disabilities, alert to smoke by vibrating when a smoke alarm activates. There are also carbon monoxide alarms, audiovisual devices and residential sprinkler systems that provide more safety for those with sensory or physical disabilities.
Test smoke alarms monthly! All smoke alarms have a button labeled for testing. Press and hold this button, following any additional manufacturer's instructions, every month to ensure your detectors are working correctly. If the test button fails and the smoke detector does not work, replace the detector.
Smoke detectors should be replaced every ten (10) years or if they stop working! If the detector does not work properly or does not work when tested, it should be replaced.
